Clifton College v Marlborough College is oldest inter-school rugby union fixture in England. The first fixture was in 1864 when a twenty a-side match took place at Clifton and the game actually ended in a brawl, so it was not the most auspicious of starts. On Saturday 29th September 2012 the match was played in the presence of 3,000 interested spectators, which included England head coach Stuart Lancaster.

Lunch for former players in the Governor’s Cup match from both Schools was held in the nearby marquee with some 380 in attendance and was preceded by a Q&A session with Stuart Lancaster and Steve Scott. Many old friendships were renewed and much interest taken in the exhibition of Governor’s Cup Match memorabilia prepared by Dr Charles Knighton. This most convivial occasion then merged into the matches played by the Pre, Butcombe and this year’s School fixture against Marlborough.
